I was at a museum yesterday which had an early 1800s french percussion rifle with this silver coin embedded on the stock. Any idea what this is?

Honestly? I don't know. But it is the right size, so I lean coin.

+1. There's nothing on it to suggest a coin--no "portrait", no denomination (no writing of any kind), no date, nothing to indicate issuing entity... Not that any/all of those are required, but a coin will usually have one or more.

Looks like a silver decorative inlay to me. I would have enjoyed seeing the rifle at the museum too.

This was really my first thought. Possibly a date in the center with more information on the hidden side. Then the date was rubbed off to make a decoration.
