To the left of the ax head should be a small initial; probably "B" signifying the coin was minted in Beaumont-le-Roger, a small town about 40 miles SE of Le Havre. If so, 34+M of this denomination were minted there in '43. In modern times that mint was opened between 1941 and 1973. And, YES, if the coin could talk it might mention some history about the Allied invasion after D-Day.

I don't see a B but there is marks to the left and right of the date that I can't make out
