That's a cool buckle! Nice find! :icon_thumleft:

I found this type years ago, but my buckle was missing the belt loop portion and of course, the other half. I'm not certain on the date, but 1830s or so perhaps? I believe you can date the buckle by the stars - one for each state.

Ddf that is a GREAT find!!!! I would have died if I found that beauty. Congratulations on that great piece of history.

I’m so jealous lol

Scooooootty thats sweet that's an oldie Ive seen one on here before. Great old relic . Your turn next my Friend

Cast Eagle buckle tongue with 27 stars encircling the perimeter. Circa later 1840's through 1850's. The matching outer wreath for these particular Tongue & Wreath buckles, (or clasps as these were generally referred to during the period), is smooth with no design. Possible of course that these were used by some militia units, although from numbers of recoveries across the country, the vast majority have surfaced from non-military sites. Most likely commercially available on belts during the time, for use in carrying the popular Bowie knives and pistols. Daguerreotype and Ambrotype photographs of the 1840's and 1850's are noted with gentlemen wearing civilian clothing, sporting similar belts with Tongue & Wreath Eagle buckles/clasps.

Awesome find.Congrats :icon_thumright:

Thanks everyone! We were wondering about the origin of this relic as we dug it in a private yard in the middle of town. The availability of these to the general public answers a lot of questions. Thanks again especially CCHunter and Jewelerguy for helping nail it down! Love this site...Ddf.

Sweet!!! Congrats !!!!

Sweet!!! Congrats !!!!

Thx! Years of field hunting and besides a handful of buttons, this was the first CW era buckle we've found, and it was in a yard in town!?...ha. Ddf.
