Friday's East Texas location

This Friday morning I'll be heading to East Texas out by Sulphur Springs to hunt the location in the picture below. I was told it was home steaded in the late 1880s, but maps show it to be closer to early 1900s. The barn, outhouse, and home are gone, but you can clearly see where they were when you walk the place. The old well is still there, but caved in.

I plan to start hunting by mid morning and finish for the day close to dark. 10 Acres is what my wife's grandmother said I could do anything I want on so I plan to hunt it hard as long as I can.

Funny you should ask... I actually e-mailed a fellow earlier in the week asking about the process. Not sure it's something that I would take on alone and since he has dug quite a few we may approach the grandmother in the future about it.

For now I plan to hit the grass running in the morning and seeing what all is out there. Chances are I'll try and grid it and do one area at a time over several hunts. Looks like the wife and grandma will get to visit quite a bit in the near future!

Even if it's junk, all finds will be posted at some point on Saturday.

If the ground in soft and you start seeing marbles and old glass...you might try screening also. Good luck!

Lots and LOTS of iron relics at this place! Wow, every time I started to swing I would get a hit from something. Not much to brag about but I had a great time until my hand hurt too much to dig anymore, and with my weakened left side using that hand to dig was out of the question. The ground is VERY hard and most items were a minimum of 4" down.

Wife's grandmother said next time I hunt I can take the shredder out and cut down the grass first so I don't have to fight the tall stuff.

Did find a 1929 wheatie...

Can't wait to get back out there.

Sounds like you had a good time, despite the pain.

What do you dig with? Just a trowel? Since it's private property, maybe you should try out a "foot-assisted" digging method.

I had a great time, and ate better than normal too! Memaw cooked lunch!

Until this morning I've always used a trowel. This morning when I woke up and my palm was throbbing I decided that a larger digging tool with foot assist is in my future for East Texas!

I plan to go out this afternoon and tomorrow to some local parks and possibly a local swimming hole to see what I can find.

Hey DrGrip...Bellapoison is right, if your country diggin, get you a foot assist shovel. If you want to keep your holes small here is my Lesche GroundShark. It cuts through hard soil better than anything I've tried. That is gonna turn out to be a good site for you I bet.

I love the tool and I want one RIGHT NOW, problem is $$$. I'll have to deal with a sharpshooter for now, but your "weapon" is definitely in my future! It's truly sad that we would have to explain our reasoning for something like this in the 21st century, but I won't get going on that rant, even though I was challenged a few weeks ago by RPD about my digging instruments at a local school...

MOST of my problem is getting too excited and going after a dig like John Wayne went after bad guys in the old day films. I need to slow down and remember what my professor (TX A&M 1986) taught me; dig when you have to, scrape or brush at all other times...

Screw that, I'm digging!

Hmmmm.... Based on the location and on the picture of relics (some look very suspicious), there is a very real possibility that this is a KGC site. Is there a creek on the property or nearby? Were these clumped together or spread out somewhat? If this is a kgc site, that's not good I'm afraid.

Hi there boattow,

I really doubt the Knights or the Masons have frequented this site for their deviant endeavors, although the former owner may have been a Mason, they are quite popular in this area.

After re-reviewing my finds I find it hard to correlate any of the relics with the KGC. Could you provide a bit more insight?

To answer your questions; yes there is a creek nearby, but in East Texas one would be hard pressed to not find one within a stones throw most of the time.

All of the relics were dug within about a 1000 square foot area. Not clumped so much, and definitely not a cache given the depth and distribution.

While the stories and legends surrounding the KGC and the other "secret" Masons are interesting, I've never found anything that would point to what I have as being suspect. I would tend to lean more towards items of meaning to their cause, tools, symbols, and certain currency.

Thoughts?

Boattow probably saw that piece of wire in a 'C' shape and jumped to the
conclusion that you are invading a KGC meeting place. However if you find
similar pieces in the shape of 'K's and 'G's I would think twice about staying.

Well the KGC has "sentinels" in other words watchers to protect the
largest hiding places of gold, silver, platinum, diamonds, emeralds and
lead. The lead will be used in fighting "Civil War II.

Let's say you accidently wander into KGC domain. Since the sentinel
sees you are an innocent trespasser he'll most likely let you off easy.
Maybe a broke kneecap or something.

Then when he gets done tar and feathering you he'll make you swear
to never ever come back.

BUT if you intentionally dig around one of the sacred spots . . Sheesh!

AH, whew, I feel better now!

The wire was bent into that shape by me... If you look at both ends you can see where I bent it so it would fit into the smaller pocket of my pouch. It was nice and straight when I found it. It now resides in the copper scrap bucket in the garage.

So your saying they are still active? That is most surprising and I now have something to research. Has anyone here ever had a run in with them?
