I met Zoso today at 11am at the Iceberg and we decided to give it a go. The temp upon our arrival was hovering around 20deg F. and within a few hours the wind increased and hard driving snow ensued and the temp dropped steadily the rest of the afternoon. As we left at dark it was about 8deg F.
The normally soft ground at the "wheat field" was as hard as pavement. I brought my relic shovel and even with that and my heavy Herman Survivor boots it was near impossible to dig. Nearly every coin was encased in frozen soil and had to be chipped out. Thank goodness there were no key dates (sadly I dug no silver today either, but I am happy with what was dug considering) as a lot of coins got whacked by the shovel or my Lesche.
Dave and I were dressed plenty warm and it wasn't that bad unless you faced into the wind.
Too tired and sore (had an accident out there and gashed my head badly and am fighting a concussion headache right now) to count the coins tonight. I did see a 1910 and a 1919s wheatie in there. Two junk rings as well as a Jefferson nickle that had been run over and squished...kinda cool.

Never let anyone say it's too cold to go out hunting.

HH all!!

Man, You really are a true soldier.

I thought I had it bad trying to hunt with temps in the 30's & the ground partially frozen.

The people here on this website are trully inspirations to all of us that are just beginning.

Congrats on the finds. I look forward to each of your post.

Happy Huntin

Get well soon. Dang you are a trooper. It was 19 this morning when I went out but it DID get warmer instead of colder than hello.

wait till spring guys! your gonna cut a $20 gold piece in half with that technic...springs only a couple months away

Thanks Dang...I probably should get stitches. It's a "L" shaped cut with a nice flap of scalp loose. I just can't see them doing stitches on such a thin layer of skin too (plus I don't HAVE much hair left and they'd probably shave it off). It'll be a nice scab ::)
I didn't even know how bad it was until Dave and I took a coffee break and when I went to pull my face mask down it felt wet. I looked at my hand and it was all bloody. It'll heal just fine I'm sure.

You guys are pushing the limits!

This is nothing less than "Extreme Detecting" ;)

Nice work.

Man that is some great hunting I can see you guys are really down with the sickness. Out of desperation I found myself in my yard last night sometime after ten p.m.,with the temp. holding at a steady 7. I managed to locate two targets,on ea memmy at about 2 inches which I dug by dumping hot water on the area. My second target is quite a bit deeper and I havent been able to unearth it yet though I plan to return this evening. Used to icefish a lot with my dad when I was younger(back when the ponds froze over, remember?)plus I work outside in the winter so Im always game for a hunt what has really discouraged me is the digging,Im thinking of using a chisel and hammer. Anyone tried this method? Any luck? Oh another spot came to mind possibly some animal barns around fairgrounds have dirt floors and maybe wouldnt freeze so bad in the winter? Anyone?HH...Shoot

I thought I might like to know were the Iceberg was, but thats too damn cold. I really wouldnt care whats out there I wouldn't be out in that cold of weather. Maybe120 degrees I could handle, but not 20. No wonder those people lost that stuff, it was too cold and they thew it away and went South!

Shootist...read 9volt's post tonight. He just dug a Peace Dollar using a hammer and chisel. I might consider it next trip out.

As to your idea, hunting fairground buildings indoors with dirt floors is a GREAT idea!...I'll look into it... ;D

Unless there's ice on the road.....Go for it,Just have to dress accordingly....I know what you mean Danimal, wind took my breath away a few time's....Nice job guy's....I'd hate to think the Iceberg was anything else...HH!!

Dan,
Hope you're o.k. Man, you guys are nuts. You make me feel guilty staying in today with the weather in the 30's. I got cold just looking at those pictures! :D
We're in the 40's tomorrow, so I'll be back at it.
Get well.

Good work!
You're hired!
Anyone who'll work that hard for those wages deserves a raise!!!

Great story & pics!!!

Great finds. But a better find would be a nice warm heated blanket and some coffee ;D

Nice digs, Danimal! Sounds like the Iceberg's living up to its name. I've found that digging in frozen ground was like everything else. I got much better at it the more I did it. Keep it up, man!

Hey Dan. Glad you had company at the berg. Since Nate and I had been there last weekend our itch wasn't too itchy. I caught up on some domestic duties. Wife reminded me how long it has been since I have been home on a Saturday. ::) I'm glad she is so understanding. ;D

I probably wouldn't have gone alone today. We actually had plans on building a small fire, but you know how it is when there are targets to dig...and we stayed warm enough.
Besides Bob..there's always next Saturday :D
Oh yeah....there's creams you can get for that itch!
