[The Grim Reaper]

I found this site by accident back around 1984 and hunted it until 1997 when it became off limits. I was walking the river bank and started finding Triangles, Pottery, Mussel Shell, Bones, etc so I went up into the field above found a Village Site. I came to find out later it was called The Hardin Village Site and was excavated in the 30's by UK and had a book written on the excavation. This site was very late in the culture and was established in the early to mid 1500's and abandoned by 1625 according to excavation reports. Lots of info on Google.

Most of the Points found here are very small Triangles and they are literally everywhere. I have had a couple of hunts of over 100 Points and sveral with 50 to 75. Finding anything over 1 1/2 inches is rare. Beads were very abundant as well, as were Drilled Teeth and Cannel Coal Pendants. Several Pipes were also found here but I never had the fortune to find any. Not a lot of Bones Tools found here but there were quite a few Antler Arrow Points and Flakers found.

Okay, here are some pictures. Everything in the show case in the last picture is from this site. There are around 2000 Triangles in there and probably 500 or more Scrapers along with lots of other artifacts. I really need to get better pics of the items in there.

Super finds. Very impressive! What do you think the notches cut into the teeth are for? I have some gorgets and a pipe with the same type of lines cut in them.

We always figured just for decoration. There was one spot where these Teeth that were ground flat and then tallied were found quite often. I have these two, a buddy has 2, and another buddy has 3 all from an area about 20x20. I'm sure there was Necklace that was being brought to the surface.

I've heard stories from some of the older hunters that have since passed away about filling Bushel Baskets with artifacts back in the 40's and 50's. There was one man that lived about a mile from the site that had probably 35 or more complete Necklaces that they had dug back in the 40's. His basement was full of Pots, Points, Beads, Pipes, etc from this site. It was amazing. Not sure what happened to it when he died. I never saw an auction for them.

I had, at one time, five Ft Ancient Village sites I could hunt within a 25 mile radius of my house. They are all now off limits except for the hillside I can still hunt which was the first thread I posted.

I had a couple of large Mississippian sites to search when I was young and the acidity of the soil took away almost all of the bone and shell. I'm amazed you found so many of those items. Great saves.

some of the drilled teeth or claws had what looked like tally marks at least thats what came to mind when i saw them they are straight lines cut or scored into them i love the drilled teeth and coal peices what are your thoughts on those lines to me it makes them even cooler and more rare

Usually on these type of sites I am on my hands and knees so not a lot of bending over. lol
