By 1875, several miners were looking for gold in a gulch near Bear Butte Creek. What they found instead were veins of galena, a natural mineral found in lead and silver. Now the prospectors worked on mining silver, and by March 1876, several claims were filed. Soon, a mining camp sprang up that was called Galena.

Never heard of the town before. Wish I had during my days of going up that way. In my earlier days as a mine supply peddler, I was calling on the great long living Homestake gold mine in Lead, SD. It was a massive key prospect account I was never able to land, before it shut down for good. Today it's an underground laboratory.
