found this at ella sharp park in jackson. I found a swale in the woods using google earth, this was about 5 inches down right in the middle of that swale. I wasnt sure what it was, so I posted in in the 'what is it' forum, someone quickly id'd it for me, saying it is a medal they give to civil war vets. Its my second find here in Jackson that I can tie to the civil war. (the other was a civil war trade token 1864) anyway, thanks for looking, HH all

Awesome, awesome find! Originator Genl. Black Jack Logan of Illinois. Who was also responsible for Memorial Day. I can remember as a kid going with my father and grandfather to the Local GAR Hall. I remember up stairs in the hall a bunch of original Union uniforms hanging on a rack. My dad used to watch the the Union vets during the 30's in the local parades drive by seated in the back seats of cars. A far cry from the way they used to travel! Being a history nut you find is again awesome to me.

PG: Wow, nice relic! That would make my day. WTG

Keep digging!

Congratulations! That is an awsome find!
I am still looking for Civil War items here. I have a large GAR parade picture from my hometown on my wall. We have a GAR park, and I am still trying to find the local training field that was used around the Civil War and WWI.

Wonderful find!

Good Luck!

Mark

Last summer on the Whites Metal Detecting Forum a guy posted an identical medal, that's an excellent find  I found a few civil war era finds myself this year, the very first was from a woods I hunt. It's a store card. I also found a cannonball (12lber) from the Dickman road project that was going on most of the summer.
