Garden Test Pit finds Roman Foundation!!!

Spent 4 hours digging a 1mtre by 1mtre test pit in my mates back Garden.
I've done a few of these in the Village but this is my first Roman Building Foundation at 1mtre 15cms deep. The 4 large stones had very course gravel mortar & a piece of Roman Pot Shard stuck between the stones.
This is within the known Roman Walled Town, but it must have been a pretty important building. I'll research some Records to see if its a known building, but I suspect I'm the first to find it!

I'm known for backfilling with no signs of where I dug, forgot to take an after shot....

What a wonderful old area you have to explore in various ways! That Roman foundation is under a lot of very rich looking soil. I wonder how so much soil became deposited over it.

I wondered the same, I found a Victorian brick at 1mtre but then only needed to go another 15cm's to Roman. (Noting that there was some Roman Pot Shards mixed into the 50cm layers, showing lots of disturbance) Very odd that the layers over 2000 years are way thinner than the last 200 years. I think this is gardens in general as in the field your only need to go about 40cm's to the Roman layers.
