GARRETT ACE 250 REVIEW

I have not detected on saltwater beaches but it works fine for me on freshwater beaches. The problem with saltwater is that it is highly mineralized and the ACE 250 has a factory preset ground balance that does not react well to saltwater. So, if saltwater beaches is your thing, The ACE 250 will not be your best choice. You will need a detector with a manual ground balance feature or a salt elimination mode. Monty

The thing abut saltwater is that it reacts like a metal. A lot of metal detectors with a "salt" mode wil just increase the disc. and/or reduce sensitivity. Most people can do the same with ease. Notice, with the GTI's, that toggling on the salt moe notches out the first 1 (or more ?) segments. ...Willy.

Thanks Monty and Willy, I am assuming that you will either get a lot of false pings or will you get anything at all? Also, the 250 has sens and discrimination, can those be adjusted to fit the need? Sorry for the questions but I dont have a whole lot of experience. Thanks for any additional info, Tracy PS, what is the difference between the 250 and the 250 pro besides 50 bucks?

Sensitivity and discrimination are both fully adjustable on the ACE 250. Monty

i dont think there is a differance between the ace 250 and the ace 250 pro. the "pro" is a package deal that includes a larger coil with the detector. the ace is the same machine in either instance.

So if ya got to spend the money over with all you have learned about this ace, would you buy it again or get something different?

hmmm.......yeah i think i would buy another one.all in all its been a cool inexpensive machine. if i could improve it, i would add an adjustable ground balance or ground tracking gizmo.something to make it deal with beach hunting and minerilized ground a bit better. a little bit more depth would be nice too, but i guess you can already get that with the addition of the bigger coil. for the money though i really do think its the best available.its hard to beat for $200 samolians ;D

Thanks for all the info everyone. It looks like Garrett will be getting another customer. All I need to do is find a dealer in the L.A. area. (dont want it shipped as I am not always available) I will let yall know how it does on the beach and in ghost towns after I get it.

Sure I'd buy another one if this one went boom! I bought this one as a back up and find myself using it a lot more than I thought I would. If I could only have one however, I'd probably choose one with an adjustable ground balance and a few more bells and whistles and take the time to learn how to operate it. As a matter of fact, that's what I did with my GTI 2500. Monty

I got my Ace 250 last weekend, the thing is great. I'm new to MD and it was easy to learn how to use it, and the pinpointing was not very hard to learn.
I found 3 pennies and a quarter in the back yard and an old hot wheel. Now I need to get out and find some good stuff. :)

Hi all, I just had to add my two cents to your post about the ACE 250
I have owned on for about 6 months and really didn't use it much till this
year.

My partner kept beating me in good finds, so I broke out my ACE 250 and
the fun began. I have found lots of coins with this fine machine and I can't
say enough good things about it.

If you read my posts in Finds of the Day, you will see some of my finds with this machine
and another machine I use. Look under Ringfinder.

I am including a picture of the tokens my buddy and I have found with the ACE 250.

By the way we have dug coins out of wet soil at over 9 inches. We both use the
SunRay Probe on our machines and this probe is really a big help.

If you are getting signals deep and can't find them, I suggust you get a probe, the
coins or items are there. I have pictures of a 12 inch digger that I put in two holes
and just the end stuck out. In one hole was a barber dime and the other was a
V-nickel.
This machine is not a low end detector. It is a GREAT DETECTOR.

;D Good evening all my fellow treasure hunters. I finally got my ACE 250 pro Friday and hit the park Saturday. I was out there about an hour and found almost a dollar in clad. I have used a Garrett 350 and a Bounty Hunter and this detector is head and shoulders above those. It was accurate 90% of the time with depth. It would sometimes get confused between the coins but the bell tone was also right 90% of the time. That was one of my best days treasure hunting. I even found a 57 wheatie. I was quite happy with the results. Today I went back to the park and checked around the play ground area. There wasnt much to be found so I went to a beach near Long Beach CA. I took it to the waters edge because the tide was out. The 250 didnt do well at all in the very wet sand. I had a few hits but never found anything. I reduced the sens and it didnt make a difference. I checked the dry sand area around the volleyball area and found another dollar plus in clad. No gold but a good day just the same. Lastly I am still learning the pinpointing action. I was unable to use it with much success. I guess that will come in time. Overall, I am glad I spent the money. I will take out the 10/12 coil next week. HH Tracy

wondering what is better the bounty hunter quickdraw2 or the ace 250 for coinshooting in grassy areas

would this be a good detector for walking along the beach with??im not walking in the water but offshore

in the dry sand this is a good machine. in the water and wet sand a not so good machine. the salt water makes the machine unstable. if you plan on doing mostly beach hunting i would recommend something designed primarily for beach hunting like a minelab excaliber or a whites beachhunter id. the ace 250 is better suited to dry land hunting.

Just ordered a 250 along with the large coil . I have had a white's 6000 DI pro that is about twenty years old.
I have an idea the 250 is going to outdo the old timer if what everyone says is true. I've never been able to break 4 inches with the old White..No matter how I tune it... The 250 should be a breeze to operate after all the knobs you have to turn on the old analog job... Looking forward to next week. I have a lot of places I want to rehunt...Thanks for the good words on the 250. ;D

Once again I see posts worrying about depth. I don't put as much stock in depth as some, but I recently recovered a wheat penny at 9" with my ACE 250. It was showing up as either a dime or a penny and the bell tone was loud and clear at that depth. I had the sensitivity set at 5 bars in the coin mode. How much deeper would you expect to go with a detector that is in this price range? Monty

Got my Ace 250 Saturday. Used it with regular coil. Did a number of test with it... Have the big coil also, have not tried it yet..I think it is far the best low priced detector on the market. super easy to use. The pinpointer takes a little getting use to, but works perfectly.
If you center it in the coil, its going to be there. The depth gage is a little erratic, but thats no big problem. Overall I would reccomend it to the novice or experienced detector...I look forward to putting some hours on it. The light weight is a plus factor for me.
