You are correct, you cannot use them underwater without modification as they are not waterproof.
 

Garrett 580 PP - good to 100ft and very rugged for land also.

I was watching videos on shallow water detecting and they were using the garrett pin pointer under water. I didn't know you could use it under water without some modifications. :BangHead:
 

It is, [580] and they are not exactly the best machines out there. Very expensive. All you have to do to make the garrett propointer leak proof is literally cover the light, and speaker with marine silicone. There are hundreds of youtube videos on how to.

I thought the 580 was a VibraProbe?
 

Your right if your not diving you don't need to spend the $$$ on the 580.
