Only reason I could think of would be if it isn't metal. Could it be a fake plastic penny? That's all I could guess.
 

It is possible that if you turned your pinpointer on when next to the penny that it de-tuned the pointer. Your owner's manual tells you that to lower the sensitivity turn it on in proximity to metal. If you turn on your Pro Pointer within a 1/4" of a coin it won't see that coin at 1" until you turn off the pointer and turn it on again without any metal near it then scan again.

I collect coal scrip and tokens. I know some of these are made of fiber and do look like a penny.

Seen many a person get into all sorts of problems when forgetting how pin pointers work AND what you can do a turn on...
