I have recently bought a Sea Hunter.Mark 2 and in the instructions on i,ts use it states that through discrimination available , it is possible to knock out acceptance of pull tabs yet still accept gold rings. I have spent happy hours with every combination of settings and cannot achieve this!.Do any of you folks know how it can be done i.e settings on the controls ,or is this just a pipe dream?
It is a claim in the sales info and in the manual.
I would appreciate any help you can give me in this matter.Thank you,
Peter.

I have the Sea Hunter. Did you get the DVD that came with it? It explains it very well better than I can.

I`m kinda new at this but i think i read that aluminum has the same density as gold so you have to dig the aluminum tabs if you want gold. maybe thats was for my machine?? i have a whites beach hunter 300 and it has 3 lights red, yellow and green and gold and aluminum both light up yellow and have similar tones. so i must dig the tabs :tongue3:

I may be wrong, but all I have ever heard is pull tabs and gold sound the same. You can disc out the tabs, but you loose the majority of the gold . NOT worth the loss IMHO . Dig the tabs . Gayle

Assuming all pull tabs are the same which they are not, you could filter out some of the smaller ones and still find most gold rings. The common pull tab of the modern variety is similar in all aspects no matter who the manufacturer is but there are some variations. You will clearly filter out some gold rings when filtering out any pull tabs. You will most likely be able to find some of the larger rings but then again, you would be assuming all large gold rings are the same. Karat makeup of a ring can make a difference as can the type of gold. White gold for example doesn't show up as well on most machines as does yellow gold. Sovereign and Excalibur users can tell you about that. Lower tone for white gold but even then Karat weight can make a differnce.

To effectively use your machine, don't filter out any tabs unless you are just digging many of them between good finds. I don't even go there unless I am digging 30 to 40 to one goody. You should expect a high ratio of trash to riches on any public beach or swimming area. That is the work equation to this hobby.

The fact is that you have to resign yourself to finding pull tabs if you want to open the entire ring spectrum to discovery. I don't believe Garrett was making an attempt to false advertise. I am sure that you can find gold rings while filtering out pull tabs with your machine. Just not all of them.

You have a great machine. Use it to its fullest potential and you will be rewarded. Garrett makes great equipment and they back it well with good customer service. Good Luck and Good Hunting.

Hello Peter,

I have used the Mark II extensively and there is no discrimination, that will still allow you to find gold. Set to 0 Elimination/Discrimination, Threshold/Volume at barely audible and Standard Trash Elimination and run it! That is the way to find the gold. Dig all repeatable signals and hope it ain't too trashy out there, best of luck! GH

Peter,

The video at shows how to set the discrimination for the Sea Hunter.
