Gaskin's Gold Pickens County

Michael L. (Mike) Gaskin b. Aug. 4, 1818. d. July 25, 1890. m. Mary Noland. They are buried in Bethany Cemetery in Pickens County, AL. They had no children, but Mike had a number of children by a slave girl.

Michael was known to have accumulated money and valuables during his lifetime. He became sick and fearing death, he hid his money afraid his relatives would steal it. On his deathbed his relatives begged him to tell them where he had buried his money. He refused because if he recovered, he would have lost his money to his relatives. As he continued to get worse, he finally gave them a clue, "the money is buried two rail lengths from the bar (meaning gap)". No one ever claimed to have found the money but for many years after his death people continued to search for it.

Re: Gaskin's Gold Pickens County

Thanks for the info Gypsy. I live in Pickens county and was in the old Bethany cemetary this past saturday. I live about 30 min. from both and will go back and look. There is a life guard of George Washington buried in Old Bethany. I will take some pics to post on this thread.

Re: Gaskin's Gold Pickens County

Went back to Old Bethany today. I couldn't find the Gaskins so they must be in New Bethal. I will go there when the roads dry alittle. I did get some good pictures to share. Enjoy.

Re: Gaskin's Gold Pickens County

I went out and found the Gaskins today. It seems there is an Old Bethany cemetery and a Bethany cemetery. I don't know why because they are both about the same age and only about 5 miles apart. The Gaskins are buried in Bethany. Took some pics for you to look at. Enjoy.
