After checking a few of my favorite spots and finding only a few clad I gave up and went home.As I was getting my detector out of the cruiser I decided to sweep the edge of a field adjoining my yard. After digging a couple of square nails I hit a target which bounced from pulltab to penny.Lo & behold,my first sheild nickel!Composition of these 75% copper and 25% nickel which explains the bouncing vdi.DBULL

It's not in great shape(can't read the date, but is reconizable),but it was pretty neat to dig it without leaving home!DBULL

Way to Go!
Still looking for my first Sheild Nickel.

Congrats!
Good Luck,
Mark

I'd say you should get permission from your neighbor to hunt that field! Where there is iron, there was a structure in the past (even though there is nothing there now). You will find other good items there! Lower your discrimination to foil and dig it all--there will likely be little trash--and you'll want to recover the brass buttons, pewter, lead, etc.

Congratulations, and keep us posted.
