Gen. Washington's Troop Encampment find

I found this interesting item about a year ago and never photographed it and just rediscovered it with my stuff. It was found on private property directly next to an old rock wall next to a protected historical area -- Washington's last troop encampment in New Windsor, NY. Here's a link to more info on the troop encampment + photos of the item. The photo with the "rivet" sticking out at the top is the back of the item. The item is hinged and the circular piece of metal at the bottom swings back and forth. The circular piece is the size of a quarter, but much thinner. I can't read any writing if there is any on the circular piece. Perhaps this is a badge? -- any ideas appreciated. I also sent it today to a Rev. War expert and will keep you updated. (Washington ended the war at a home along the Hudson River in nearby Newburgh.)

Maybe it's a keyhole cover to a treasure chest ! Nice find !

Re: Gen. Washington's Troop Encampment find

Looks like a lockdown hinge.
The hinge was fastened on something, and the round lockdown would be secured by a latch.
How heavy is the metal?

Thanks, it's lightweight metal, maybe copper from the signal, or maybe brass.
