when i search old houses, this is the method i use... maybe someone can add to this...
WATCH OUT FOR THE WELL!!! All old houses had them out back somewhere...
most old houses didn't have plumbing or electricity, and that was added years later and sparingly. if you set your detector to all metal you will trace the water pipes into the kitchen and bathroom and you can trace the electrical wires as the run from the panel to the fixtures and switches..
keep swinging, cover every inch floors walls ceiling. you see folks didn't even have door locks back then and often they had to go into town and that would take all day.. so when houses were built the owners usually had a hiding spot or several little spot where they cold stash things. trim boards slide out, hidden compartment in the backs of closets, above door jambs, etc. usably the master bedroom would have a little stash spot, look around any built in shelves, for stair treads that lift up..
and there would be a larger spot out back for hiding things like when enemy soldiers were in the area or you would be away for a long time.. people would just bury stuff in the back yard.
So you are looking for a target not connected to anything else. not the nails not the pipes not the wires... a target around a piece of trim or doorway, the mantle, just inside the main doorway, around staircases
you see old folks had just a little bit of money and they would maybe keep a few old coins and a few old bills maybe in a baby food jar tucked up above the closet door, .. grandpa died and a few years later so did granma... and that little jar has been sitting there every since
look for the old clothesline post and check between them coins fall out of hanging clothes
walk to the closest creek and you will see where they washed clothes... again check here all sorts of buttons and coins
check around the mailbox. people used to pay postage with coins and get change back when they didn't have stamps... lots of drops there
check around the entrances the steps... high traffic areas where people dig into their pockets for their keys
if the house is raised and and you feel safe crawl under there. you will find all sorts of marbles and stuff the kids stashed years ago
check around any gates in the surrounding fields... all the traffic was funneled through them for decades.
if you are into relics look for th elargest bushes behind the property... most certainly where the old outhouse stood
they used is as a landfill for all things they discarded.. the poo has long gone back into the circle of life and is just dirt now.. wait until the winter time when the vegetation dies off and dig into the old shithouse.. there is treasure in there
if there is an old fence out back pull up on the post... great place to hid a jar full of whatever...
