Relic Hunting
Well old man winter is knocking on our door now so I figured I'd better get out for a hunt. Went for a permission and everyone at work and the farm was off limits for Biosecurity so I went back to the site where I got a couple of coppers and a ramrod guide.
Start was slow as I got a brass reed and I soon got bored so I did some tree limb crossing of the creek and went to the actual older site.
Slow going again as I was getting deep iron with holes, nuts, washers, buckles, but very few targets. I got a nice sounding hit and popped the Wreath Buckle. Then not more than a foot away this brass item that looked like a knife guard but I noticed writing on the edge.
It turns out to be a 1832 George IV Half Penny Token from the Province of Nova Scotia! So why the heavy reworking on the token? Well I got the idea that might of been repurposed for the tongue portion of the buckle.
What ever the reason was I got a couple of firsts today.
This is what greeted me for the start of the day.

The Half Penny fits for a tongue. Pure speculation on the coin being reused as this, I'm open for all ideas that anyone has to the purpose of this coin.

How the day ended, most of the snow gone.

Not sure why some of the photos are sideways. Sorry

Congrats on the 2 keepers, I think you're right about the repurpose

I love that!
Cool story on the field fix!
when I saw that I immediately go back to my old handyman days when a cent from my pocket became a washer on the job, it cost a cent to fix that I'd always say, but I'll charge you five plus the install

something different I like that too!

Congrats pepperj :occasion14: That's a unique find. A little jerry-rigging back in the day.

Neat finds! A friend of mine works construction and when he runs out of washers and only needs a couple more he will drill a hole in a coin from his pocket and use that instead of going out to buy more washers! Some people; i guess...

Thanks Ironhorse
I'm liking the different also, kind of a one of.

Thank you LD

Guess they were making do with what they had, Half Penny fix.

Now those are some really cool and unique finds. Old coins were often used for odd fixes. You may have found one. Blah, snow.:angry1:

I've seen a couple LC re purposed to washers, I'm loving that buckle.

Thank Beenfishin

It's cheaper to do it that way than spending the time running to the store. :)

Thanks Kurios

The coin is really different have ing square hole in the centre a first I might add. Snow is all gone bye-bye for the moment, just like to add it was only one day difference from last yr for the first snow fall. "Climate Change"

I've seen a couple LC re purposed to washers, I'm loving that buckle.

Thank you Treb. I'm thinking the settlers had a little military or came up after the CW because the ramrod guide and the buckle are from the same site.

Nice variety of finds!

Thanks Scruggs

That buckle is sweet, but the idea of a re-purposed coin being used as a tongue is REALLY cool.

Congrats on the really unique find!

Thanks Tom
I would totally discountedifferent this theory if the two finds were separated further apart at the site.
Having many years of heavy pasture grass and everything in the 8-12 inch depth doesn't help the recovery rate.

Not me, if I found those two pieces in two different states, I'd still swear they went together!

Good show brother!

A couple of sweet finds. I like the "Buckle Theory"
Always thinking,, keeps you good at figuring out how the pioneers made things work.
Congratulations

That's what I love about this pass on, makes me think every time I dig something as this.

Very nice and interesting finds.
Thanks you

This would certainly make sense from a 're-purposed' stand point Jim.
I'm more happy to see that you got out detecting for a while amid all of your renovations.
Hope you're feeling better these days my friend! :hello:

Dave

That’s a really really awesome find pal. I love the story and I think you’re dead right about the repurposed coin. Really cool
