RP and I got out today to many different sites. Our 1st pitstop was to the small park. I managed a nice-looking 1902 Indian Head (35th of the year) at 4". The reading was "horrible" and that is why it was missed by previous detectorists. Heck, I am one step closer to my goal of 50 . Our 2nd stop was to an old home. RP managed to get 6 Wheaties here. Lastly, our 3rd stop was not a planned one. After we left the home, we decided to scout an area that was near the river. This part of town goes back to the 1700s. Well, to make a long-story short, a landowner of a home that looked promising was mowing his lawn at the time. So we asked permission, and he kindly told us that we could hunt his whole property. The land is about 200 yards long and 70 yards wide. We were thrilled!
After about 20 minutes of detecting, I got a perfect "Dime" reading that pinpointed at 2". I popped the plug and had a large copper glaring at me. I called to RP, "Hey, man, I just got a Large cent!" He ran over to me and helped rub the dirt off of the coin. That was when I knew what I had just found. It was no Large cent. It turned out to be a Georgivs/Britannia Halfpenny
! It was my 1st Colonial coin that I had ever found. Even though the date is not totally legible, RP and I narrowed it down to this Post-Colonial issue. The reason why is because we could see that a "4" was evident for the last digit in the date. I am guessing that it is a 1774. But, we are very sure that it fits the category of the Britannia Halfpenny. It definitely is a great feeling when you are the 1st one to hold a coin that was lost around 215 years ago.
I also found 3 musket balls on the land. They each read a perfect 50 VDI and pinpointed over 5" deep. What caliber are these? Are they from the 1700s? I gave one of the bullets to the landowner. I handed him one and said, "Here is a piece of history from your land."
