I've been looking for an old burned down house ( pre 30s) on property for awhile now. Long story short, I think I've finally found it. I was pretty certain I found a piece of a sliding door lock, but I wasn't 100% sure. I found a few more pieces of iron that weren't nails, a trillion nails and some random copper pieces. I took everything home and cleaned the piece that I thought was a door lock. Yep, definitely a door lock! Then I cleaned another piece that seemed like a small mold of some sort. I set the two pieces beside each other to clean another piece and realized it was the other part of the slide lock! I also found small hatchet or axe head and what may be some part of a jack for a house. They aren't coins, but if there are any to be found here, I'm closing in! 20210619_103817.webp20210619_103829.webp20210619_103845.webp20210619_103850.webp20210619_103903.webp20210619_103933.webp

Nice!!! Congrats!!!

Thanks everyone! I'm kind of a detecting newbie, so I'm sure I've not been griding. I will look into it and try it! Hopefully my next update will have some goodies.

Nice finds! Dig every signal! A nail may be hiding a nice coin or button right underneath!

Thank you for the advice! I've already learned the "dont just skip it cause its iron" technique and generally dig everything! I've been surprised by a few non-nail items here and there. I use a bounty hunter and an old 90s whites machine, so digging every signal I think is my best option for my equipment and experience.

Sounds like you are on it. Good luck and hope to see you post more finds from that site.

When I'm in the deep woods I turn my discrimination all the way down as I want to pick up nails or scrap metal to tell me I'm coming into a house site/camp site/picket point. Once I'm in it I make any necessary adjustments.

The story goes...

An African American preacher from the Northeast lived in this house. He was allegedly thrown out of his own church for assaulting a man who cursed in his church and eventually settled here. That being said, he had a temper. According to the tidbits of story my father in law had gotten from old timers, a neighboring man would constantly drive his wagon through his fields, destroying his crops, intentionally. After several warnings, he shot and killed the man. After news broke of the murder, a mob came a burned down everything on the property and he was imprisoned. He was released in the 1960s. This is all word of mouth and I haven't been able to validate information yet, only charred and rusty items. I know the mans first name but haven't gone to the county archives due to Covid restrictions still in place. So far, at least the part about some sort of structure being there is fact!

very cool, your diligence is paying off. bet you find some really cool relics and other goodies
