Not sure what it is, but agree it isn't old. Seems like it's big enough it would have been hard to lose, maybe fell off a truck or something. It looks like a folding wood ruler, but I've not seen one with segments that big.
 

Really don't know right now. Do the numbers start at 1? I ask because I see it measures almost up to 8' long (96") bit it appears it's not 8' long.
 

Seen folding rulers, but nothing like this one.

II can almost see it as a piece of wall art.
 

I think they used those to measure heights of wires like power lines but it looks like something is missing.
 

Here's another element...it was washed up from the lake with a bunch of driftwood.

It looks like a Bagby gauge stick.
Mud Hut, I think you may be right! We can all laugh together on this if I'm asking a dumb question because I know absolutely nothing about boats but...would this be used to measure the oil or gas in a large boat?
 

I've got a very similar measuring stick for our fuel oil tank at our former home.
