Found it at a bottle dump where most everything seems broken.
Seems like something people might collect?

Here's a patent for a self-sealing jar issued on that same date--perhaps it refers to your find:

Cool - yes the first link looks right. I couldn't find much else except someone saying they're kind of rare. Don't know if that would make it valuable, though.
