Twenty-one acre Goat Island, off Harris Beach State Park just north of Brookings, is the largest island on the Oregon Coast. The island was declared part of the first unit in the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge in 1936. It is also part of the Oregon Islands Wilderness and is off-limits to the public. In spring and summer, the island is noisily crowded with 100,000 nesting sea birds, including such unusual species as Leach’s storm petrels and tufted puffins. The island has the deep soils conducive to the burrow nests of puffins and petrels. Thousands of Aleutian Canada geese roost here in the spring, and a gaggle of dusky Canada geese winter here. Thus, the island is sometimes also called Bird Island.
