Gold Aztec looking medallion

I found this at a church rummage sale. Along with gold chain. The 18kt gold backing the ,, medallion is attached two is in fact 18kt gold. When tested by machine it showed between 14kt and 18kt gold. Im hoping for more info on the medallion. Thank you ahead of time for your help

First welcome to Tnet. That is a fantastic piece! Looks like it was made to hold something I thought a watch but no. I.ve see a locket that held a lock of hair. Some one will get it!!

Just thought I would throw out a few ideas.
Montezuma wore a feathered headdress.
Also the small tubes on the piece, may have once had feathers stuck into them.

My first thought was the medallion has come from something else and has recently been mounted on the pendant. :icon_scratch:
By 'recent', I mean the medallion looks to be older than the mount, it may have been soldered together sometime in the last 30 years.
