On a recent trip to the gold feilds I was using a minelab 2200d gold machine, my partner was using the Explorer 2. We were using the explorer2 to help sort out junk targets. We did find nuggets from 1 gram down to point 2 of a gram all detected with the explorer2 the machine was set with small 7 inch coil, running with iron mask turned on set at minus 16. in deep, gain at 10 running on highest manual sensitivity setting allowable by the ground conditions. When using the machine use slow even swings and dig all low toned signals.
I read on a recent post that you cant find small gold with the Explorer 2 I have found pieces smaller than .2 grams with mine it just takes practice.
good hunting seeya Neilo ;D

Way to go Neilo! ;D The Explorer II is ok for gold nuggets of the size you mention too. I hate digging those tine pieces as my knees don't bend like they used to and all that tiny stuff is getting harder to see also. Personally I have used the GP3500 and found some too. But this machine costs many $$$ and I'd hate to drop it. I also found lots of bird shot which is hard to seperate from the sand. Too much work for me. That's why I like beach and water hunting, I get to use a small scoop and not have to bend those knees.

Thank you neilo ,

? ?I was Sure with the right settings, the Explorer wouldn't be completely Useless,
in these situations.

? ?I just didn't want to argue with those who Don't like Minelab? ;)

BY THE WAY, I'm moving this to Minelab, Metal Detector Reviews - By Owners! .
So Newbies can see it CAN Be Done.

Neilo I kind of wonder if anyone will see this here but I regarded your tests with the 7" coil as being very important.

If you can detect .2 grams of gold with a 7" coil perhaps you can detect small gold chains and other non solid gold pieces witch are non detectable with the stock coil. I don't know what weight gold links are but it would be interesting to find out. Failure to detect gold chains(or non solid pieces) with the Explorer has always been a sore point with Explorer users as the stock coil was not sensitive to pick up the individual gold links.? I have some non solid wire gold specimens(1 to 2 grams) which are detectable to 8 " with my X-5 which were completely undetectable with the Explorer's stock coil.? In fact none of the specimen gold I had was detectable with the Explorer. This is in line with numerous observations by a lot of Explorer users regarding the failure to detect gold chains with the EX 11 .The Explorer has been described as a hybrid between a PI and a VLF. In this regard it has some of the characteristics of a PI (poor detection of non solid gold objects and poor sensitivity to very small gold compared to VLFs). The X-5 can detect gold chains but it also is incredibly more sensitive to small gold as it can detect 1/2 grain sized gold. Therefore, it can detect a lot of specimen gold that is not in nugget form that PIs can not.

If you can detect gold this small with this 7" coil, perhaps you can detect gold chains with it and Explorer users need to know this. Perhaps someone who has a 7" coil could test it on various gold chains to see if a 7" coil can detect links in a gold chain.

There's a thread on Eric Foster's PI forum on the subject of BBS, FBS, and 2 freq. detectors and whether they are PI's. Sifting through the responses it can generally be seen that they are NOT PI. Even if they use square wave "pulses", it's still continuously broadcasting, whereas a PI completely STOPS, and then turns on the receive circuitry after a delay. That is the hallmark of a PI detector and anything else is nit PI. I don't want to rehash the whole thing, pop over to the forum & you can read it all yourself. I actually started the thread 'cause I was tired of reading posts where it was claimed that the ML BBS & FBS where "PI" or "secret tech PI" detectors. Figured that guys that actually build PI detectors & have most likely read through the patents for BBS, FBS, & dual freq. could & would set the books straight. ..Willy.

Hey Willy
I hope you didn't miss Dave Emery's last post on your thread. His PIB of course is the Pulse Devil and Surf Devil. Sort of a preview of things to come.

Hey George. I engaged in a bit of correspondence with him on the Pulse Devil, but since I'm not one to kiss & tell ..didn't want to go shooting my mouth off whereas he might want to keep things low key. His detector is one I've been waiting for a long time to be introduced. There are a number of areas that (carpeted with iron and silver/jewellry that the Pulse Devil would excel in) which I'd like to hunt but can't stand the digging. We're talking tens of thousands of nails (all sizes), anywhere from 1 ft to 2 ft down. A real nightmare. ..Willy.

Interesting....will have to do some additional testing and weighing of my test items....7" coil? Which one (out of couriosity)? Joey? 0.2 grams is pretty small, gain at 10 (didn't try that) make total sense since most gold machine run really high gain out of the box.

Thanks for the post/feedback Neillo, will have to visit the bench again.
Exciting to think it will hit on small nuggets, may have to buy a few to test.

Any results over the months past JW? I am anxious to learn about this.
