Hey everyone. I found a really rough shape ring with what is engraved as 18KT with a maker's mark (see pictures). I am looking on line for best way to clean it, but not sure of best option. Thoughts/suggestions? Thanks and HH.

Looks like a toasted gold plated ring to me.

That's what I thought. Is it customary to engrave plated pieces? It weighs 7 grams and has 3 stones on each side of the ring and the top stone is also gone. Not sure if it is even worth keeping.

All stones are missing

If you look right next to the 18k, you see HGE which stands for Heavy Gold Electroplated, or gold plate. So that's the reason for the appearance, it isn't solid gold. Many of us have been fooled by this, sometimes the HGE is light or mistaken for makers initials. Not much is going to help this rings appearance. Better luck next time.

Thanks everyone. I didn't realize it said HGE (bad eyes). I thought it was H.G. meaning a name. Thanks for the quick help on this. Next dance will be for a keeper.

SusanMN is right: Plated. Yours would be a dead giveaway the minute you pull it from the ground. Because real gold wouldn't corrode like that. If it were a fresh drop, it's usually still a dead-giveaway, when the weight doesn't have the density of gold.

Nice old plated ring, wish the stones were still intact...still cool. :occasion14:

I have found many of these old gold plated rings, some with stones, some without. I do not clean them, just accept them for what they are...cool rings. GL & HH
