I found this rock in a creek in Morgan Hill, California. I picked it up because a golden glint caught my eye. I thought it was pyrite, but pyrite isn't common in that area, and when I polished a side of it i could see these veins. I don't think pyrite forms in veins, and it doesn't have the typical black hint to the normal pyrite I find. I'm sorry for my ignorance! Any help is appreciated. I noticed this was your very first post - so, Welcome Aboard Reywas! Take a look at Sub-Forums: California for information (i.e., clubs, etc.) directly related to your state.

Need to see a freshly broken surface. Will a knife scratch it?

How do you suggest I break it? And yes, a knife can scratch it as well as a nail, but my fingernails cannot.

A hammer. :)
