Hi TNet community,

Summer is vast approaching here in Australia and I would like some help, trying to find some good books to read on either shipwrecks or pirates over the summer holidays. This is where my interest lies, especially the 1622 and 1733 plate fleet or any other galleons or coins. Also anything relating to pirates, pirate ships, or privateers etc.

I have already read ship wrecks of Florida, treasures of the Spanish Main: shipwrecked galleons of the new world and salvaging sunken Spanish treasure by bob weller.

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks

Just got hold of the second edition of John Potters "treasure divers guide" ( first edition 1960 second 1972 it's got Aussie stuff in it too)

A little old fashioned but a fantastic read. As an example it goes into very great detail about things like dating wrecks by cannons and I would highly recommend it

Also it's gonna be about 3 bucks from a second hand book store.....any Robert Marx books are worth reading too

Here in Florida that book is known as the "homewrecker". Must read for anyone interested in shipwrecks. Florida Classics Library published an updated paperback edition in 1988. The update to the second edition is a separate pamphlet that I believe you can purchase from them for a few dollars.

A great book of stories within the story, Shipwreck; a saga of sea tragedy and sunken treasure - Dave Horner.

The story of Padre Diego is fascinating and tragic. As a historian and a shipwreck salvor it boggles my mind that he was onboard both the sinking of La Capitana off Ecuador AND The Maravillas!!!!

As someone looking for wrecked galleon treasure the stories of the smuggling and contraband within the story is very intriguing.

This summer as we were chiseling away at a pile of cannon balls I kept "hearing" in the back of my head the part of the book when the Captain of the ship told the inspectors not to look in the stacks of cannon balls!!![FONT=Verdana, sans-serif][/FONT]

Flash got it all started with me, great read. I ended up teaming up Marty.
 
I read abit about John Marx on the net, the guy is a living legend. It said that he responsible for finding 300 wrecks all over the world.

They way John as gone, is there anything going to be left for me/us to find :)

As for anything left, there is Thousands of shipwrecks with many hundreds still worth locating needing to be found.

The big problem is the stupid UNESCO convention on in-situ monitoring the natural destruction of UCH instead of recording or recovering it making it pretty pointless spending time, effort and money searching for wrecks only to watch them further disintegrate of the next 50 years.

This is a great book about the authors many finds off Nova Scotia. :thumbsup:

Didn't the author of this book, turn it int a tv series?? I can't remember his name but he was a maritime archeologist from Canada?

I have just finished looking at this website as well, and I have to agree with SADS 669. This is an awesome collection of titles, that's a years worth of reading right there :)
 
Since you are in Australia, you should check out:

CLASSIC DIVING BOOKS-HOMEPAGE

Great index and selection of dive books. All treasure hunting book collectors should give this site a once-over.

Check out Signum Ops website too. I have read almost every one of their books, all excellent. Working on "West of the Bull" right now, and it is outstanding.
