Relic Hunting
The wind has been screaming out of the SW this weekend, so today my wife and I took an hour walk on a north facing section of shoreline. It was a good decision. First we spotted a decent knife made of argillaceous slate(AKA argillite here in New England). Then a nice Madison triangle made of Normanskill flint. A small intact quartz point rounded out the hunt. Decent day for a change. Football for the rest of the day. LOL. Haven't quite got the hang of placing photos in the correct order using an iPad yet, but obviously the argillite knife is the 2nd photo. Oh well....

Thanks, Chris. Did I mention my wife found both the slate piece and the Madison? Naw, I probably forgot. LOL. I like that piece too. BTW, I just learned recently that what collectors call argillite in southern New England, and the archaeologists here call it that as well, is technically argillaceous slate, and that the NJ and Pa. argillite is technically argillaceous shale or argillaceous sandstone. We all call it argillite in New England, which has led to confusion with collectors south of here because it does not look like the argillite(argillaceous shale or sandstone) from south of here. I know someone who recently found a point of NJ argillite on one of the Ma. offshore islands. I'll look for a self-portrait on the computer....

Nice finds Charl. I really like the triangle.

Very nice. I was wanting to go hunt the beach today but I was out of town until just now. Hopefully I can get out early tomorrow morning. GO PATS!!!

Nice hunt, Charl. I like the little triangle. The slate knife is interesting also, I have a similar piece I'm begging to think might be slate as well. Thanks for the post.

Thanks, Illiniguy. It's one of our better points in quite awhile.

I'm watching the Pats now, Pancake. Here's hoping! Good luck hunting Monday.

Thanks, Viking. Feel free to post a photo, but I'm no expert on material from your area. I know slate from the Carolina's patinates like and looks very much like the "argillite" slate from RI and Ma.

Hey thanks,Charl. I guess you're knife looks a little more smooth than mine, more slate like. Not sure what this material is, thanks for the help.

Good hunt. I have learned that women are very good hunters. The slate is interesting. It is here and on sites but have yet to find anything worth keeping like yours. Nice hunt good to get out.

That is good information Charl thanks for posting it. The Argillite I commonly find in NJ is pink, red, purple, and black and then there is the multi colored, those are usually white and dark purple or white and black......I do not know if this is caused by heat treating it or what but they are kool looking.

i'm thinking some form of Rhyollite could be that material.

That might be rhyolite or argillaceous shale/sandstone. I just don't know the Mid Atlantic materials well enough to make a confident call. But I'll go with rhyolite as I think it resembles that as much as anything, especially with the brown tones.
You can always start a thread asking for material ID help, some knowledgable people on here from your region would probably nail it. Thanks for posting.

Nice points, Chris. Really like the fishtail right center.

No problem Bill!!...........Charl check out the shale point Northwest in the frame all the way at the top......The orient is awesome. I have a spot in a field that produces nothing but orient fishtails, lecroy, and fox creeks. Go to another section of the field you find poplar islands and normanskill, and kirk points. I have only found one lost lake ever in NJ. To bad it was broke at the base. Then another field I have produces all ranges but there are alot of perkiomen blades found in it. I walked around a beauty once had foot prints all the way around it and I know that I walked over and over that area. It was orange jasper and with the leaves on the ground it looked like one of them. Then one day it stared right up at me. I found a g-10 example perkiomen not to far from it that year and on that same day found a beauty of a Jacks Reef point. It was classic form and looked like the ace of spades. It was beautiful. It sickens me though as that all was part of the collection that was stolen. To this day I'm looking for any of those artifacts I found to hit ebay or show themselves somewhere. This happened 10yrs ago for those that do not know and consisted of a perfect bannerstone pre-form with the start of the drill holes. A gorgeous rose quartz hafted scraper with a hook on it. Several perkiomen blades most jasper. Several orient fishtails multiple materials. Several jacks reef points. All in all roughly 800 plus arrowheads and several stone tools. 2 axes, a 4/4 grooved celt, a 4/4 grooved maul, A fluted shield bannerstone with pole area damage. The list goes on.....sickens me!!!

And it sickens me to hear it, Chris. I cannot imagine the depth of despair and depression that would plunge me into, especially where personal finds are concerned. Sorry it happened to you, I don't know if I could ever get over such a thing.

Yeah that one hurt and took it out of me for while. The two frames I have posted before are what I have built up so far in my spare time. At least the fields are still producing. Although it is funny how they produce less and less each year. I have a site that was a massive village site. I have found everything up to paleo Holcombs in that field. No Clovis points though. The village is on both sides of the river and that is where i find my perkiomen blades. Love that field and it is for sale. To bad i don't have 3 million to buy all that land. It is over 125acres. and spans both sides of the river. I have found several broken Banners, axes, celts, 1 pendant, beads, drilled bear tooth. I'll tell you what Charl you ever get down this way, i'll put us on some flint!!

Here Charl you may have seen these but this is what i have built up so far.....................002 (800x600).webp001 (1024x768).webp

Nice stuff, Chris. Good thing there are still SOME left! We've played out many of our sites over the past 20 years....
