No, they don't HAVE to take them. I don't have time to look up the law, but its called the Coinage Act I believe or something similar to that.

anyone know any other ways to purchase coins for face value other than banks? just looking to try something new maybe..perhaps get better silver yield. guessing banks are the only way.

Banks are your best bet, but you might try the service counter at grocery stores.

Fill up your tank, then go to pay stating all you have are the halves. You have no other way to pay and you have legal tender. If he refuses call the police, but i'd doubt he'd test you that far...

I'm telling you merchants do NOT have to accept coin for payment. A couple of years ago a friend of mine got a speeding ticket. He forgot all about it until the afternoon of the last day to pay it which just happened to be a Friday. Naturally he was broke. He rushes home and barely scrapes up enough rolled coin to pay the fine. He arrives at the police station, with just minutes to spare, and plops down his rolls of coins. They wouldn't accept them! While they only accepted cash (no checks or credit cards) they said that they also did not accept rolls of coins. He began to protest. They responded by bringing out his orange jumpsuit and informing him that he would be arrested for non-payment of fines in about 15 minutes. They also let him know that since it was Friday, he couldn't be bailed out until Monday, as apparently they don't do that on weekends. Luckily there was a nearby bank. At first the teller wouldn't cash in his coins as he did not have an account with them. But, after hearing his story, I guess she felt sorry for him and did him a huge favor. He made it back just in time.

if the govt makes it and calls it money (coins they say have monetary value)--then by god they should have to take it in payment of debt -- hell after all they did make it , didn't they , and they force us to use it when breaking bills don't they ?--what they (the govt bodies) are not going to take the coins they ( the govt made) made ?-- brother thats nutz I tell ya.

I agree to a point. If someone buys a house from me for say $250,000, I shouldn't have to accept 25,000,000 cents as payment if I didn't wish to.

I looked it up. The law I was referring to earlier was for some other country. In the good ol' USA merchants can refuse ANY type of payment. While the coins are legal tender, its up to the individual to decide if he wants to accept that form of payment.

But are you finding silver that way or just getting everyone else's dumps? I use my halves at Walmart all the time. Anyone coming in asking for halves after I've been there are guaranteed to be taking home clad.
