Detector(s) used
Tesoro/Cibola Garrett ATPro
Primary Interest:
Relic Hunting
showing up today. I haven't had a Garrett in a long time or ever used a machine that display's numbers and such. I mainly search for CW relic's. What do mini balls show up as, number wise, on the screen? Anyone have any helpful tips I could use this afternoon for running it the first time? I have been watching videos on youtube but if anyone has anything different let me know. Thanks...d2

Find clean ground an test it with various targets to see where they show up. Not all detectors show the same numbers but they're close. Learn in Pro mode. Good luck.

The Digital Target Identification Number is basically only a reference number that is not consistent depending on depth, the type of minerals in the ground, ground density, orientation of the target, and how mineralized or corroded the target is. ....many varables!
I have found deep steel round bottle caps are the worst offenders with fluctuating Target ID Numbers, as high as 92 with a very, very slight scratchy sound.

You can do an air test with any item to get a quick reference to a number, but don't expect to see the same number when that item is in the ground for a long time. It can be 10 or more numbers different.

Like Sandman said, start using in Pro Zero mode and you will learn the sounds from scratchy low iron sounds to screaming high pitched silver (or a Hot Wheels Car when it screams at you) :)

You have probably seen these - Garrett AT PRO Video Library

Hunt in Pro Mode, zero disc and set the iron discrimination at 25. Then.....beep-dig beep- dig beep-dig. Learn the tones while digging multiple targets. Do dig those whispers, indicating a deep target.

Got my ATPro today too. Have to wait until this weekend to take it out. The wait is killing me.

A few years ago, someone here posted a list of probable targets based on ID numbers for the AT PRO. If I stumble upon it again, I'll send you the link.

Best of luck,
Bill

Minie balls usually bounce around the upper 60's to to mid 70's with a high squeak mixed in with the mid tone, after I pop the plug the squeak is more dominate and the vdi is higher.shrapnel and camp lead are in the 50's with the squeak also but this is not set in stone depth and size of the target depends on vdi and tones

I found this posted somewhere in the past but I don't remember the exact source, but I have found it to be a good guide.

All the VDI numbers will be close but not the same. So much depends on soil type and many other things. For me and the locations I hit that have the old lead ordinance, some .68 Mini's ring in at 73 I have hit others 200 yrds away in a different field that rang up close to the 80's. Others argue with me about this but I still think it depends on how the bullet is laying in the ground as to what numbers you read.

I thank y'all, a lot!!! I took it out yesterday and listened to it bark and bark and bark, I have been using a Tesoro Cibola that only sounds off over a target, and this is taking a lot to get used. While I am in the process of learning my new detector, in a place we have worn out over the last 20 years, my diggin' buddy finds a domed officers button and a handful of minie' balls and round balls. I dug a Winchester shotgun shell. If it does not rain I will be back out as soon as daylight gets here. Thanks for the info...d2

I think you'll like your AT Pro D2.
Good luck HH and post your finds

I went out this morning in between the rain that is here and the rain on the way. First dug target was a Winchester shotgun hull. The second was a piece of aluminum (I thought I knew what it was before I dug it) the third was a TIE RING SHARPS bullet. I found another bullet on the way to the truck. I will post a picture when we get a program this afternoon for downsizing pictures. Our computer flew crappy on us and we have had to start all over. It aint much, the bullet, but I am tickled so far. Thanks again for the help...d2

I also went from a Cibola to an AT, and I was really perplexed with how chatty the AT can be in comparison. But here we are 2 years later and I love my AT: Yes it talks a lot, but there's a huge amount of information there once you learn its language.

Here is my Tie Ring bullet. Soldiers were camped along the side of the road and this one was in the edge of it hence all the pock marks. I left one signal due to rain so maybe in between showers tomorrow I will hit it again...d2

Good save d2

I am using my ears more so than the numbers. If your signal sounds good at 2 inches, a nice mid or high tone, will it still make the same sound at 6-8 or more inches just a little lighter in volume???d2

I have had really deep targets in the 8 plus range like beaver tails and ring pulls that will high tone cause of the depth. They sound real good but you have to dig them. This happens on my Deus also.

If your soil is not highly mineralized most coins do have the same tones at 6"-8" as they do at 2". The volume level is the only thing that changes.
Buttons do not though,in my experience deep buttons CW & pre CW have a broken tone "like a bottle cap" until you pop the plug and run your coil over the hole will you get a clean high tone.
I dug an officer's Infantry button at 8" it sounded just like a shotgun hull until i popped the plug.

Just uses those numbers as a guide not a rule. Listen to the tones in pro mode. For instance, I've dug 6 Indians and they all seem to ring up 69-70. Older bullets and casings are almost always 60-61 99% of the time for me
