My brother called me Weds around 2 pm and told me he gad just driven by the site and it looked like they had cleared off some more of the site and there were huge piles of dirt next to it. After it rained all day I decided to drive out and check it out and when I got there I saw that they had cleared about a 40 foot wide section of the site about a foot deep and from one one end of the existing ditch to the other. The dirt piles that were about 5 feet high were now at least 12 to 15 feet high in places. To say I was salivating is an understatement for sure. It still needs a lot of rain on it to wash it down, but the Bone, Shell, Pottery, and Flint was laying out everywhere. I hunted it for about an hour and a half until it got to dark to see and I'm definitely going back on Thursday.

Now, on to what I found. I didn't find a lot since I wasn't there very long and it does need a lot more rain, but I did find some nice pieces. I found 3 Triangle Points, 2 Bone Beads, another Deer Antler Arrowpoint and a piece of cut Deer Antler, and I also found my heartbreaker of the year. The last piece is a Shell Disc with a hole in the center and tally marks all around the outside edge and the hole in the center. I have seen pieces like this in books and they usually have two holes drilled in them for suspension as a Gorget. This piece has 26 tally marks around the outside and 8 around the hole. It looks like a fresh break and may have been broken when they dug so I'm going to keep my eyes out for the rest of it.

Pic 1. The finds from the hunt.

Pics 2 and 3. Pictures of the Shell Ornament. I took these before I cleaned it so it would show the tally marks a little better.

Pic 4 and 5. The Deer Antler Arrowpoint and a picture of the view inside the drilled hole.

Pic 6. The 2 Bone Beads. The small one is very highly polished and very nice.

DorkFish, That shell is an awesome find! Do you think that it is a fresh water shell? It looks like it would have come from a pretty big shell. I don't know enough about fresh water shells, so I am just wondering out loud. ;D

Thanks for showing it!

Sounds like this may have been a village site at one time. And if you could get permission to set up a table sifter and start shoveling. For everything you might see on top the ground, there's much more just out of site. Good Luck.

Monk, yes this was definitely a village at one time. It is called the Feurt Mound and Village Site and is very well known in my area. A local man bought the property the site sits on and has been excavating it for around 3 years now and he let's me surface hunt it. He won't let me screen it yet, but I'm working on it.

Here is a link to a site where you can read about the Feurt Village.
