Well I did it! :icon_sunny: I went all out. I bought the Explorer SE with Sunray X-1 Probe and Sunray Stealth 5.5 coil. It also came with the 10.5 slimline and a free 8 in. coil. I put the 5.5 coil on first (until I get the hang of pinpointing). I took it out last night for the maiden run. I ran the machine in the factor default settings. Boy! what a different world this is from my simple little BH 505. A couple of things I noticed right away was the sensitivity of the machine. It seems to find everything. Weight. This was a big concern, because of what I had read. I was very surprised at this. I think I had it in my mind the detector would weight a ton. The machine is maybe 5 pounds tops and balanced great! No weight problem, at least for me. I did run across something that worries me. When I hit the noise cancel button the detector went into a sound loop (the best I can describe it). A steady Weeee-opppp sound over and over again. Is this normal?? I read later that the noise cancel can take 30 seconds. It freaked me out in the field so I turned the machine off and back on again before waiting 30 seconds. Does it make this noise when finding the best channel or is there something wrong with the machine. I have never even laid eyes on the Explorer SE until I opened the box, so I have no idea what is normal or not normal for the machine. I did find the "Smart screen" pretty worthless at least maybe until I learn the machine. I much rather see the digital ready out. To me this is more useful information. I can see this machine is going to be quite the adventure to learn. It is pretty confusing to me right now. At least I didn't get "skunked" I found two pennies and a quarter. Although it felt like I was flying blind. Lots of sounds, readings, and jumping around of the read out. I need tons more time on this machine.

Hello Frank!
Good for you and congrats; the SE is a wonderful machine once learned!
A lower back condition forced me to sell both of mine and friend, I do regret it! I know one day I'll return to MD'ing however.

Regarding NOISE REDUCTION, it's actually very simple to use. I personally favor ALL METAL MODE utilizing only IRON MASK set @ 16 and SMARTFIND considering the discrimination programs worthless and the space dedicated by Minelab in their manual wasted space and ink. When using NOISE REDUCTION, I make it a habit to turn off IRON MASK so I will be sure no metal is beneath my coil. Raising the coil up off the ground 6 inches or so, I hold steady for a slow count of eleven, matching the blips of the machine. The sound made by your SE should not be a steady one. Are you sure you have the switch on your SunRay properly flipped over for the SE's coil?

One more thing, at first glance the SE appears a complicated piece of equipment. However, given a little time and a lot of swinging you wil figure it out. I think it a wise decision for you to choose the smaller coil initially as pinpointing has caused a few headaches for many including myself. The SunRay was another smart investment!

Good luck!

Thanks GRB for the great advice. I did just what you suggested. I held the detector about 6 inches off the ground heard the sounds and the machine found the channel and run perfect! I am sorry to hear about your back problems. It must really suck not being able to metal detect after it has gotten into your blood. Have you considered trying to use a hip mounted set-up? Hopefully you can get back in the game soon. Good luck with the back problems and thanks again for the advice. I took the SE back out last night and it was wonderful. The machine run very stable even after I bumped the sensitivity up to 27. I think I was really over thinking the way it operates the night before. I started pulling pennies, quarters, and nickels out from about 6 to 8 inches. It is truly a great metal detector.
