Just wondering if anyone has been out to this claim recently. I'm heading out to Lead for four days with the kids and would like to hit it but only if there is water running for a sluice. It will be my first time on a claim of any kind and need some general advise. I've also never been in the wilderness of the black hills and have a fear of bears, should I bring a gun? Any help would be appreciated, I planned this at the last minute.

Get some good bear spray since it sounds like your wilderness experience is minimal a gun could be detrimental to your personal well being.
You make enough noise the chances of a bear encounter are slim. Keep a clean camp, don't leave food or dirty dishes or cookware around either.

One should always be prepared for spontaneity.....:laughing7:

Yeah I'm more of a desert type of person and the only bear spray I have is in .308. I'm really not that worried about it I just want to find some gold, but I want running water to do it.

I have a new sluice that I want to try out, that's my main thing.

I cannot advise if Boulder Creek (which runs through the Husker) is running enough for a sluice or not right now. I've driven by part of that creek on the highway (east of the Husker) and from what I can see it looks like there is a fair amount of water running there. So the odds are probably in your favor. There are no bears in the Black Hills, once in a great while one might wander in from Montana or Wyoming but they don't stay long. There are plenty of mountain lions, but they usually keep their distance from people and there is no documented case of one ever attacking someone in Black Hills. I've spent countless hours hiking who knows how many miles by myself in the Black Hills and have only ever seen a mountain lion once, and I was in my vehicle driving on the Interstate when that occured.

Thanks Maitland, I'll bring the sluice and hope for the best.
