I have Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx and you can buy the particular maps of interest for this GPS. They do have a marine map available which gives you in depth detail on all bodies of water. For what you are interested in doing I think you could use just the basic map that comes with the unit to make waypoints around the water edge. These are stored and you can go back to them when ever you want. I don't think you could actually keep a running list of your finds but you could name each waypoint whatever you want. An example would be naming a waypoint what ever you found at that location. Hope this helps.
