It doesn't work that way no matter what the inductance is. The speed of a target response has nothing to do with how close it is to the coil. It's not like radar or sonar. The target response decay is set by the tau of the target which depends on alloy, size, thickness, and shape. If the 8k can't detect a target on the surface, it won't magically start detecting it at some depth.
I've noticed in this and other posts that you toss around a lot of technical jargon but it doesn't appear you really understand it. Ferinstance, metal detectors operate in the near field which has an inverse cubic roll-off, not the far field which is inverse square law. Do you know what CEMF is, what causes it, and how to reduce its effect? If a PI detector can't sample until 5us, can it detect a target with a tau of 1us? There's a decent book that explains all the physics behind metal detectors, you might find it interesting.
