Hey all. I found this today and posted it in "what is it" column. Its in rough shape but still legible. I wasn't sure till I found a photo of the back of one on ebay and solved my own thread.

Very cool! Maybe you can make an offer on the one on Ebay and then frame the 2 togeher.

The the biggest pic enlarged--- it that after it was cleaned up ?

Just wondering as it doesn,t look anything like the first pics.

It's a picture he found on Ebay of one in much better condition just to show what it's supposed to look like... If that was the same medal I'd be bugging him to give up his technique for cleaning finds.. lol

The first pic is the front and the second is the front of my find. The third is the back of my find. The fourth is an ebay photo showing the back side of a different medal. The design on the back of mine (third photo) and the design pictured in the ebay photo (fourth photo) look to be an exact match leading me to believe mine is the same medal as the one in the ebay photo.

The Grand Army of the Republic was a fraternal organization composed of veterans who served in the civil war. Founded in 1866 in Decatur Illinois, it was dissolved in 1956 when it's last member died. Here's a Wickipedia link explaining what it was. Grand Army of the Republic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

That is really a cool find. I have some GAR things from my Dads side. Those guys had some really fun reunions as did the Confederates. Good I.D. Lots of history in that medal.

Thanks, the thing that really caught my eye when I found it was the small shield in the center on the back.
