Whilst walking along the river Cru'Dad noticed that one of the fields on the other side had big piles of earth in it. Although it's a field we stopped detecting on over 3 years ago, we thought it worth an investigation with the Deus. As it happens they have put in a large trench for gravel but have also brought in a load of contaminated soil to put back in the hole, this was where I got the toy tractor from.
This idea was a bust but we decided to wander the hundreds of acres of Grassland that was once ploughed fields. We got to the far corner field with nothing to show, so on the way back to the car (OTWBTTC) I said lets take a different route along the river instead of through the deep ditches & over the fences. This netted Cru'Dad a hammered from a field we have had nothing else in, & he had already lucked out a Roman Coin as well!
So, he saved our 3hrs 15min hunt.

1 Roman Coin (Commodus)
17th C Skillet Handle & Loop
2 Tombac Buttons
Vicky Halfpenny
Toy Tractor
Hammered Penny, maybe Ed IV, York Mint

Very cool, congrats

Cru'dad bailing ya out. Lol.

Nice hammered Cru. Nice ID with the skillet handle as well. I try to set into memory whatever you ID in hopes I'll remember if ever found. Cheers

January is a hard month...but with a hammered the day all is good!

Man, I love those hammered coins! Thanks for sharing.

very nice stuff

Nice hammered find! :occasion14:

Thanks all.

Next hunt will be new land, not tried or tested!

Can't wait to see what you and Cru'dad find. Good luck!

I know, it's exciting & risky at the same time. But if there is a good area, I know I'll sniff it out, if not it gets crossed off & we move on. We do have far more options this year than we normally would.

Same here. With rock solid soil in fall lots of crop came out very late so no green manure was seeded and many fields are open over winter. The right time for test and tune sessions! Good luck to you both!

All nice finds but the 400 year old skillet handle and loop are very cool.

Yep, but no guts no glory. I just did some scouting that flopped yesterday. And I seem to remember a few great test sites that payed off tremendously for you.

For us, it's just more farmers turning to Spring planting to avoid the growing Black Grass issue.

Super nice find , congrats on a great find ! Good luck in 17
