While detecting today we found a canteen cork with a partial chain attached about 8 inches down near a stream where the Union and Confederate armies camped (at different times of course!) This was a fun find, because we had to do some research via the internet. At first we were looking under bottle corks, but couldn't find anything. Then we spotted a photo of a canteen and started searching for canteen corks.......BINGO! It matches a Civil War canteen cork perfectly! We are very excited and are looking forward to looking for the rest of the canteen, however, the soldier probably still kept it and plugged the opening with a stick or something........hopefully he isn't still hanging on to the canteen somewhere underground! Pictures are forthcoming

Has anyone ever came across a soldier while digging civil war relics? That would be really freaky! :icon_pale: :sad1:
