well got out today for a few hours . went to a place that i have known about for some time but just saving it for today glad i did found a silver 1964d dime and some neat stuff . found a coin that when i dug it out i thought it was a large cent all i could make out was a liberty face boy was i jumping for joy couldn't really tell what it was till i got home to clean it . now i don't know what i found need help its the size of a large cent it has the face of liberty and liberty on the head ban the words COMP. SMAR-- cant make out the last two letters and 8 stars along the rim .on the back it has a eagle with a shield the words COMPOSITION- SPLE MARKE with 5 stars . have any ideal where its from it has no date that i can see but at the top it looks like it was hit with a bullet that put a small dent in it thanks bjb

went back today didn't find much in the yard found a few wheat's and two tax tokens and a eagle thing looks like it has 4 small holes in each corner of it to mount it to something and a copper ring that has new england on the inside . well the real treasure was waiting for me inside the old house so hears the story . after i got done with the yard i thought i would take a peek in the house this house is run down and about ready to fall so i really hesitated to go in well it got the best of me so in i went there was allot of trash but i started to look at spots where someone would maybe hide a cache. looking for loose floor boards checking the walls .well i got to the closet and up high on a shelf in the back was a small box i had to jump up to see it and take it down i looked in and out jumps a mouse i threw the box down and a mouse nest and a stack of papers fall out i almost walked away but stooped to look at the papers . there were old letters , stamps and all dating from 1870 to1950 land deeds dating 1894 to1914 old war post cards ,tax paid receipt from 1887 to1896 a few pocket books . and a homestead certificate signed by Theodore Roosevelt dated 1902 and the list goes on a pocket guide dating 1904 to 1905 with a list of all states with a list of towns and if they had a bank a telegraph office and the population to the census of 1900 this will help in finding those towns that are long gone and ones that had the most people in them meaning more lost $ .thanks all bjb

Re: great day

WOW...Dont know what it is but definitely a great find.Looks like classic US head and eagle...anxiously waiting for someone knowlegible to identify!

Re: great day

Neat coin/token whatever It looks like a copy of an early 1800s quarter or half...otherwise I have no idea.... cool find tho...

Keep hunting TnT

Re: great day

If you have a Red book...coin book....under half cents......It might be a 1837 token. No half cents were struck in 1837. Because of the great need for small change however, a large number of tokens similar in size to current large cents were issued privately by businessmen who needed them in commerce.
................................................Or maybe not.

Re: great day

BJ,

From 1845 - 1860 the series of U.S. merchant tokens continued much as it had in the late "Hard Times" period. Commercial types prevailed; there was very little of the political satire of the 1830's. Counterstamped advertisements on cents and silver coins increased greatly during this period, one of the most common being the VOTE THE LAND FREE slogan of the Free Soil Party in 1848. Another innovation was the widespread introduction of spiel marke tokens, that is, pieces imitating the design of current gold coins ($10, $5, and $20 pieces being the most common, in that order), struck in brass, and intended for use as game counters or poker chips. These pieces, showing the eagle or Liberty head of the gold coins, or often both, are so numerous that one numismatist, Michael Pfefferkorn, has written of this era as the Spiel Marke Period.

yours seems to be an 1890-1900, German Spiel Marke / Token

Re: great day

Play money !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A REAL SPIEL
I located this object in an Indian camp in western Nevada. Made of copper or brass, it has a Liberty head and eagle shield like those of a $20 gold piece. It's not one, of course - but can you tell me what it is?

Your double eagle look-alike is a spiel marke or game counter, c. 1850s; and while it bears no maker's mark, it was almost certainly struck by the Lauer firm of Nuremberg, Germany. The inscriptions Comp. S. Marke and Compos. Spiel-Marke are variations of Composition Spielmarke, and Spielmarke is German for "play money." The motto In Unitate Fortitudo is Latin for, "In unity [there is] strength." These design differences were intended to prevent accusations of counterfeiting, Similar game counters imitated other U.S. gold denominations, and as their name suggests, they were used in much the same way that play money and poker chips are today. Value? Probably $7-12, although lately on eBay they've ranged all the way from $2.95 to $32.99, apparently with no takers at either extreme.

Re: great day
