Hello all...

Well I just wanted to show you what else I was able to pull out of the ground without a metal detector. Me and my son have been sifting this area of the trails since it is full of pottery pieces and many iron objects that the detector constantly beeps.
We were out Saturday afternoon and got the sifter hung from a tree branch and started working on this hole that we are expanding out from. What we have is a soft layer of topsoild that goes down about 6-10 inches and then it hits an ash layer and hard clay layer that is tough to break through with the shovels. Most of the pottery pieces and the cast iron "stuff" has been in this top layer so once we get down to the hard clay layer we move out from there.
Right off the bat just loosening this top layer of soil my son comes out with a two tine fork that has what appears to be a clip so that it can be clipped in your pocket. I believe and I need verification on this so if anyone has info I would appreciate it, but I think this was a CW soldiers fork and they used to clip them in the pocket so they did not lose it easily. Now I could be way off base on that so please let me know what you all think.
We were there for about 3 hours and found some wood stove parts made from heavy cast iron and again they were in this top layer so I do not think anything sunk any further than that top 6 to 10 inches. We were loosening up the dirt by this small tree and my eyes saw something sqaure in shape pop out of the dirt. I picked it up and when I found out what it was I told my sone that I was done for the day and anything else we find was his. After a few select happy swear words of joy, I realized I had the verification that I always suspected, that this was the house of a CW veteran. I had in my hand a Grand Army of The Republic veterand belt buckle! I have had a buckle like this on my want list for a wwhile and even though it is not actually "from" the CW it is associated with it. Like I said after that I went and sat down and admired my find and he continued to sift for a bit more since he wanted something as good real bad now. He was able to come up afterwards with a compass so this person must have been into woodworking or something since I have a coupe of files and a chisel and now the compass.
I also think that this veterans unifrom and stuff might have been in a trunk since I am finding the corner and side brackets from a trunk. I also feel that there was a fire and possibly the trunk burned and that is why the ash layer and the items seem coated in ash.
Anyway enjoy the pics and if anyone has any info on teh fork or compass I would appreciate it.

Thanks
Funkman

Re: great finds at the ATV trails!

just a couple more pics to show.
first is a padlock that is still attached to the bracket and one of the corner brackets for the trunk.
second is a couple of skeleton keys that were found with sifting.

Thanks

Re: great finds at the ATV trails!

That buckle is great. I would love to see it cleaned up.

I would love to see it cleaned up also but I am unsure on how to do it without damaging it further.

awesome buckle!!!!! MR TUFF

Re: great finds at the ATV trails!

thanks Gary....

me and my son can't wait to go back up on Saturday. We made a deal that we take turns on keeping the good stuff whenever we are there together.

Re: great finds at the ATV trails!

I believe the fork is from a meat carving set. The portion of the bottom is a rest to keep the times from touching the table. Pretty cool finds. Like the dividers and that buckle. Keep digging...there has to be more.

Re: great finds at the ATV trails!

think you might have it there DMN on the fork. Did not even consider that. Thats what happens when I assume...

thanks

Re: great finds at the ATV trails!

No prob. That's the best thing about this site...there's always a few people to help out with IDs. I've over-used them for a few years now and they've never let me down!

Show us more!

Re: great finds at the ATV trails!

Good to see you're still making some nice finds there.

Re: great finds at the ATV trails!

thanks Joe!

quick question on the GAR buckle....

Does anyone know what the two stars on the bottom mean? I have found pics of the buckle and all do not have the two stars.

Any CW postwar buckle experts out there???

Thanks

When I saw the two tine fork the first thing that went through my mind was a frog gig but that is a complete guess. I've heard about them coming out of American Revolution Camp sites but I was never present when one was found. Don't see any reason why they would not have used them during the Civil War especially if food was tight.

Good luck on IDing.

got this in reply to an email I sent....can anyone confirm his findings? I need to get my hands on this book!

Hi Jim, According to the book, some folks believe this variant just has
the stars as space fillers, while some collectors think that this plate
is
made to represent a Department Commander's Rank, or a Junior Vice
Commander in Chief, each of which was represented by two stars.
There are two examples of it in the book, "Plates, Belts, and Swords,
of The Grand Army Of The Republic", by Douglas Roussin.
A nice find !!
Best Regards,
Steve
