hi everyone!
i travel a lot, so i just decided to give treasure hunting and gold panning a go. looks fun and im already in the wilderness.

would anyone know which kind of metal detector would be in like a 200$ range? and is the GPAA membership worth it for gold panning??

thanks

new member. metal detector advice

Hi, i want to start searching for gold and jewelry. need advice on a metal detector. from what im reading the Garret 250 is a pretty good deal. i want something under 300$ and something that can detect nuggets and jewelry thats on a beach. im currently living near the sand dunes in California and would love to find lost jewelry.
was also thinking of prospecting and panning out here so id like the metal detector to maybe help with nuggets aswell. thanks for any advice.

I noticed this was your very first post - so, Welcome Aboard IsoSauSi! You didn't list your state (or country) in your profile. So, you might consider jumping over to Sub-Forum: Select Your Area.... and selecting location information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.) directly related to your state (or country). You might also consider adding your state (or country) to your displayed profile (SETTINGS -> EDIT PROFILE) - members may have more success helping you (your location may help, etc.). In the meantime - I am sure a member(s) will pipe in with some suggestions.

Welcome to the forum from middle Georgia. Before you spend the money, read as many of these "new to the sport" threads as you can to get as many perspectives as you need to get your first detector. On that limited budget you may want to see which machines you seem to focus on in the 400-500 dollar range. Then look here in the Tnet classifieds, or if nothing is there go to Craigslist and look. You may find there are good deals in both places and you can get a better machine than you thought you could afford. I was surprised to find a 6 month old MXT Pro for less than half of the new price. I wish I had kept and learned the machine. THAT is the other big lesson here! It has been said here, and most detectorists here will amplify that it takes anywhere from 40 - 100 hours or more to really learn your machine. YES, you can turn them on and have some immediate success, but to really KNOW the machine take your time. I'm getting back into the sport and still haven't fully set myself on a machine, although now that the bike sold I can get what I want. Take a week or so to pour through these threads and you'll be glad you did! On the GPAA question, I already had coffee with a nearby site member that has a GPAA membership and he feels it is definitely worth the price of admission...Hope all this helped and once again, welcome!!

Welcome to Tnet from Mississippi.

Welcome to the forum!:occasion14:

I am a GPAA member, and I suggest you join. You'll need a little more money for a nuggetshooter. Gold nugget detectors start at about $600.00 new. Look for a used Tesoro Lobo Super Traq; Whites GMT; Fisher Goldbug II; Teknetics G2; Garrett AT Gold. Good Luck!:skullflag:

Welcome to the forum. I agree, GPAA is a good way to know where you can get on a prospecting area and Great people to deal with when you do as they are everywhere on the map as far as locations.

I used to run into GPAA guys all the time in Alaska.
