Over the River and thru the Woods...

Had a chance to hunt the old homesite behind one of the tobacco fields today. Upon the advice of "chopper", I carried my Green River good luck token with me and I'd have to say it worked ...

I literally had to walk about a mile around the field to the back of the first stand of trees (in the field pic - look to the far right of the trees and you'll see the trail curving around). Unfortunately, the land owner informed me that I was not able to bring any cameras with me nor was I allowed to walk through the rows. He apparently has had problems with hunters in the past taking advantage of his permission and in his words, "turnin' the place into a damn party palace"...

Anyway, when I got to the other side of trees, I saw nothing. No old home, no outhouse, nada. I decided to venture into the woods a little (it was very warm today - didn't feel like meeting up with any critters) and that's where I found the old Coke bottle pieces. Then I found the old Dr. Pepper piece. I started to swing the coil (mind you - this was my first time MD'ing IN the woods) and was getting frustrated as h#*@ because of how tight it was in there. I then got a solid penny/dime signal - barely four inches down and I pulled up the wheatie - 1910. Seing the date I was getting "un-frustrated" rather quickly. Next signal I dug the strange round piece (it looks like it's some sort of cap to something) with the mother-of-pearl button(?!).
I dug a few nails (or what I think are nails) a tore up Buffalo with no date (go figure :tard:) and I eyeballed what I believe to be a piece of pottery(?). I was getting ready to split when I got a decent quarter tone and dug up the green shot-gun shell. I checked the hole and I was still getting that quarter signal - had a little trouble pin-pointing so I just dug out wider - I thought I was seeing things when I saw the edge of a coin. All I kept thinking was that it was a large cent - and it was - until I got home and washed it up. Call me crazy, but I'm glad I carried that "good luck token" with me today - after I washed what I thought was a large cent - I realized what I dug up was a "hard luck token" - dated 1837!!! It's not really worth much, but it's the oldest "coin" I've dug so far and it's cool as a cucumber ;D. The front reads, "E Pluribus Unum" and the back reads, "Millions for Defence - Not One Cent - For Tribute". I'll definitely be heading back there this weekend as I am off for three days and it's supposed to rain tomorrow. It should be nice and sloppy on the way back across the trail... ;D

Thanks for stopping by and keep on swingin'...

Lots o'pics to peruse...

The Hard Times token is great. I hunted a farm for years growing up finding tons of stuff, including some great tokens and coins. A few years ago my buddy went back there and found the same token you found..........IT SHOULDA BEEN MINE :tard: I mean, I was happy for him. Congrats

That is so cool - that Not One cent coin. Great condition too. :icon_sunny: Nice job.

The Green River had nothing to do with it other than getting you brainwashed. ;D

I saw your pictures of the tobacco fields and was thinking "What the hell?" complete with raised eyebrows and puzzled expression.. then it dawned on me.. You're from the Easter side of the Appalachian mountains.. where they "Pick" tobacco leaves.. and only the leaves.. that's kind of foriegn to us "Westerners" where we cut the WHOLE plant and string it all up to cure.. then pluck or "strip" the leaves off later after the cure has been set. It's just kind of odd looking at a tobacco field and seing all those "skeletons" of plants standing out in the open like that. Our fields on this side of the mountains are just stubble after the crop has been brought in to the barn. Of course the stalks are returned to the fields, later, after they have been stripped, to become fodder for the next crop.
Cool finds by the way. I liked that "hard luck" token. It's certainly older than anything I've found to date. Bet you can go back to that site and find more old coins if you get the chance. And no telling what else you might find. Just watch out for the snakes.. course this time of year, they are getting more and more scarce. Soon you won't have to worry about them at all.. just the frozen ground to deal with when you are trying to dig up a good target. <grin> Been there.. Done that! Will probably do it again! <chuckle>

Happy Hunting my friend!

Frodov

Good stuff, man! Good stuff.............KOD

Hey!
I love that token! Older than anything I've found! Very Very Cool!
I have great luck in the woods. Good targets aren't all real deep. I always use my 5" coil in the woods, it lets me get around all the brush and find stuff. A machete helps chop away some of the brush to get to your signal too.

Good Luck. I would bet you will find silver in there!

OH my goodness! 8) What a great hunt, DD! LOVE that token. I'm yet to find one of those.

VERY successful 'first woods hunt'! Way to go!!

Nana

Congratulations on you first woods hunt and token.
You'll get hooked on the woods.

YOU SHUT IT BOB! That Green river token had EVERYTHING to do with that find!!! ;D
Don't carry that hard luck token with the good luck token cuz they'll cancel each other out!
Nice Finds! (you can send me my cut to Po Box 63......)

That hard luck token is a SWEEEEET dig !!

That token is worth it in my book! Congratulations on the awesome token!

Colonel, Sparky, DaytonD, FtBall, Bryce, JDD, CK, Derek and D'Freak - many thanks guys...

Fro' - they cut the tobacco in different stages here - they should be turning the stalks over in a week or so. Thanks bud... :)

rtde3 - the farmer had problems in the past with this spot being photographed and then having hunters without permission come misuse the land - so I was told (personally, I think there's a possibility of there being an old still somewhere on the land.) ::)

"Uncle" Nick - I figured I'd just post it (I almost called on this):D. Iz sends a smooch to you and the Mrs... :-*

Nana, Bob, Dodger and MPostma - Thanks for the kind words. Yes, I can certainly see how woods hunting can be very addicting! I will most definitely be using my four inch coil from now on though... ;D

Chopper - you were right bud! Looks like I'll carry it with me some more...

Cool finds! Millions for defence Not one cent for tribute. I believe that goes back to when the pirates of the barbary coast, off of libya were accosting our ships. Shores of Tripoli. It is a defiant statement and super cool coin.

Good luck,
HH.
