This is a uniform smooth piece of sandstone found today. I've never seen a piece of sandstone this smooth, flat, and rounded. Is this a grinding stone? Post pics of grinding stone examples if you have any. The other piece has a scraper edge and may be a preform.

Depends on where ya found the sandstone, ? Did ya find it in the creek or on a terrace? It looks well formed to say the least. IMO it could be well stated, but it depends on where found; even then it could be a geological discovery. If you found it out of place around other artifacts, in a field for example, it has mor a chance in being something important.

Abinard,

I fish creeks in the area and never see rounded sandstone. The streams in SWPA are very low gradient. The site is on a terrace, and I've only found Woodland period projectile points in this location. Flint flakes and flint tools are found in this area also.

I found a similar stone at the same site in late September. It’s the same exact length but thicker and narrower. I picked them up because they seemed unnatural and out of place of other sandstone in the area. I’m still leery ID’ing non-flint objects as artifacts because I’m fairly new to hunting artifacts. Here’s some pics of the one found in Sept compared to the one found today.

rUBING ROCK AND A SCRAPER i WOULD SAY..

Blindpig, thanks for posting those fine examples. Your examples build confidence that mine are artifacts. Ink-a-lot would a rubbing rock be used as final grit to smooth other stone or wood objects?
