This rock was found in the vicinity of a few flakes. I know rocks sometimes have a flat edge but this one was rather smooth. Rock or artifict? Thanks for any information.

If it wasn't used as a grinding stone, it should have been. I think it's a grinding stone. Crush it with the flat top and grind it with the other part. Wear is too perfect, but I'm not an expert by any means. I would have collected it and used it here at home in mom's old metate. Nice find...

Thanks. Now I might have to go find it again!

Looks somewhat like cast concrete on the flat side...Or a lump of grout...

That is an observation not a criticism...

Welcome to the forum sharkie looks like a pestle to me!

It would help if we knew what part of the country you are in. A lot of folks are familiar with what is right for materials and types of artifacts for the area, and they would have an easier time helping with ID.

I agree with quito, it does look like a pestle, but I'm not real good on tool ID. I would definitely have brought it back myself.

Thanks everyone. The item is in Montana.

It would have come home with me also. To me it looks like a pestle. Welcome to T-net:hello:

Looks like pestle to me, nice find...

Very cool find!!! Hopefully you will find more in that location!
Welcome to T-net, it's a great site Enjoy!

Sure looks like a pestle to me also, a variant of the "bell" pestle type.

Should be a bell... Bell pestle that is. Not a super worked/shaped one, but still nice. I think i have read that some call them hoof pestles? So maybe yours could be a hoof since it isnt overly shaped into a bell with the flare?? Eh, just putting the info out there! Now, get back there and find it again... :tongue3::thumbsup:

Thank you everyone very much. I returned to the site today and discovered this point so you all might be right.

I also found this rock. Now I know this is likely just a rock. .. but.... the edges looked completely out of place. It looked like a saw on the ground. I don't see any sign of percussion but the edges sure are intriguing.
Thanks again everyone. I will share more and some of my older stuff in other posts. I figured I'd keep this one here since the three were all within a few hundred feet.

Look like a good area in the Western US for discoveries to me.
