I can only relate on how I do mine, but I set the sense so it is very stable and I discriminate almost nothing out, setting it to 0-2........I always set the volume as high as it goes and the threshold to where it sounds like a small mosquito near my head.
until you learn the machine I would use the auto sens. , turn the volume to the max, band 1 threshhold on just enough until you hear it, and zero notch and disc. Read the manual again later and adjust the settings that will work for you.
Good advice from txkickergirl, just be aware if it doesn't appear stable, adjust sense down a little till it is stable. I use none or very, very little disc, and NO notch. I would rather dig a hundred pull tabs then missa nice gold ring.

These are good settings. Take a few coins, pull tabs and gold and silver rings an lay them down on ground without any metal in it and see where they disc. out and how they sound. Practice pinpointing just off the tip of the DD coil as it is faster than using the center.
