Gun barrel or part of a bayonet socket

Dug this up yesterday at a old civil war fort done some research and some people say it's a part of a gun and some say it looks like a piece of a bayonet socket

The way it is broken, it appears to be cast iron, which a gun barrel or bayonet socket would not be made of.
