Gun Part?

Sadly here in Charleston SC they are trying to develop every square inch and everything is becoming a townhouse or a parking lot. Stopped by a construction site and they gave us permission to hunt the area. one small area looked to be an old dump site. old broken bottles from the 1800s losts of iron, old brick, indian pottery and so on. this was the only item I kept the rest went to person who gave us permission. I am almost positive this is a gun part, it is as thick as the brown bess part someone identified of mine some links ago. although it is shorter around 4" anyone know the anything about this piece? Also appears to be a crown in the middle and I think an 8 also stamped into it. you can see them better on the second photo;

That is a very interesting artifact.The crown will probably designate a British connection.Hope someone here can identify the piece.

appears to be a Brown Bess style side plate
the Spanish crown may indicate it was made in Spain
