Took the hair clip to the jeweler and antique store today first of all its a broach not a hair clip. Jeweler tested what I thought was copper turns out its 14k gold!!!! Surround is sterling silver jewels are marcasites (not sure how to spell) Antique dealer believed it to be 1860's victorian "mourning pin" she quoted me $250.00 at least! I think i'm gonna send this story in to Whites and see if it gets posted!

Hi all,

Went back to the civil war park today, here is what I found....

Anyone have a clue what this thing is? It looks like the box from Hellraiser :o

The hair clip that cleaned up...I used the boiling Hydrogen peroxide method (and silver polish after)

Neat stuff!

The toy soldier is one of three varieties of the c. 1935-40 "#23 Machine Gunner, Sitting" made by the Manoil Manufacturing Co. of New York. These can go for as much as $15-25 in good to very fine condition.

It's catalogued in O'Brien's book on toy soldiers as #M40. Here's a near-mint one on eBay, priced at $32:

I like the machine gunner with it's dirt and patina better than the one with fresh paint.

Nice group of finds!

Congratulations!

After looking at it more, it is not a hairclip at all! Its a broach, or pin...whatever they called it back then. It has a straight pin in the back that lets u poke it through your clothing.
If anyone sees anything like it on the net let me know, i'm dying to know some info about it

Thanks!

I like the hair clip, but the machine gunner is great!

Nice brooch and gunner. WTG! Keep digging.

Re: More finds from civil war park- Hair clip cleaned up!

That silver brooch is quite a nice find! As far as the wierd iron goes, you should put it through electrolysis and you might be able to tell more about it.

Cheers,

I love that brooch, the army guy too.

Nice job on the brooch.......would that piece of decorative metal possible be the cover to a rifle patch box...I know they were usually brass....but what about the older long rifles ?
