Hi to all,
I said in a post over the weekend that I would be going out detecting this morning to see if I could get another hammered. Well the day started off with three coppers then the attack of the buttons. I decided to move over to a corner of the field I hadn't really touched before and straight away a brooch popped up followed by some nice bale seals. I also found a strange artifact with a crown on it and what maybe a spindle whorl. By now I had been at it for about 3 hours and decided to do one more row back to my bag and call it a day. That was when I got a sweet tone and dug up the stater. After looking at it for 10 minutes I decided to do another hour but found I couldn't concentrate because I wanted to go home and research the coin. This is my first Celtic and even though it is only a half I shall cherish it forever.
I am also including in this post the 2 hammereds I found on Saturday when Cru and shaun come down.

Pic 1&2.) Cut half Henry 3rd long cross
Pic 3&4.) Short cross penny Henry 3rd
Pic 5.) 1. Brooch 2&3. Lead seals 4. Brass artifact 5.Artifact with crown 6.Brass furniture decoration ? 7 to 11Buttons 12 to 14. Victorian and George V coppers 15. Spindle whorl?
Pic 6.) The reverse of above
Pic 7.) The rest of the stuff I haven't cleaned yet
Pic 8&9) Gold half stater. As far as I can tell it is Gallo-Belgic E from around 50 B.C.

Hi SS and thanks :hello:.
I was just looking at one on the colchester finds web site. I didn't realise what I had until I got home and let it soak for a few mins. Even then I didn't know a definite period, just somewhere from late roman to poss viking/Dane. We have evidence from neolithic all the way to modern on the fields round here. Bet you can't wait to get down here now :icon_thumleft:. I will plan the next meet as soon as I get a def on the fields.

Yeap, the brooch is stunning! Shame it's broke, like my hammered(not you) :D

Which part of the field were you in...was it anywhere me and Cru had been?

If you stand in the middle of the field and face the church, the brooch and the stater both came from the right hand corner near the houses. In fact between the houses and the willow tree where we came off the field.

Funny, where I said to search as we came off :D

The brooch is amazing & your first Celtic Gold is the start of more to come  As I posted when Cru'dad got one, its about the earliest Coin you are likely to ever hope for in the UK :icon_thumright:

Thanks savant365 and cedarrett,
It has been a really great couple of weeks. Got loads of great stuff off my fav field and it still wants to give.

Why do you think I went there ;D. If Cru says it looks good then it must be

Saxon 6th century square headed brooch, usually associated with burials :notworthy: fantastic find :o I'd rather have that than the Stater :headbang: would have been similar to this one

SS

There used to be a Saxon minster on that field.

I was drawn there from the beginning, but the draw of the Church was greater. Had I returned the next day it would have been hit next but I'm much happy you got the Stater, they are a real gem & a good finish (although not over) to the year. Also I think you knew it was good as well, close to the other hammered you had & close to the water.
Also, I can now see the NICHOLE clearly on the Short-cross so it seems the original ID stands :icon_thumright:
If I had that field, I would be off on a weeks holiday  :D

It's a amazing find, and very rare....complete worth a lot of money, but that's not the issue(I'll say this before someone jumps in) if it's quite small, there usually were two :read2: so they could well be another :o
